Critique

The early stages of a manuscript will generally have structural issues. You may have spent two years building that world of yours, but if the characters on your planet spit fire throughout the novel and said magic was lost during the Abyssal Wars on chapter five, you're going to have a problem.

A critique is an entry-level edit that focuses on big-picture content and structure, not a detailed combing of each chapter and scene (that's a content edit), prose (that's the job of a line editor), or catching misspelled or missing words (that's the copy editor's job).

Critiques are provided in the form of a memo. The memo may offer suggestions to:

  • Address pacing issues

  • Strengthen the narrative voice

  • Build dialogue to draw the reader in

  • Focus on underdeveloped characters

  • Review plot points to improve story's impact

Here are examples of what I do not focus on in a critique:

  • Repetition

  • Awkward sentence structure

  • Grammar and misspelled words

  • Cutting or adding to the word count

Follow-up is encouraged if you need additional clarification or information.

A critique is $6 per 1,000 words, and the word count is rounded to the nearest thousand.
